The Owharoa Falls is an easy detour and only a couple of kilometers away from the scenic Karangahake Gorge between Paeroa and Waihi – New Zealand. My suggestion would be to travel to the Karanghake Gorge 1st for an afternoon walk through the old gold mines. Then after working up an appetite, I would recommend The Bistro Falls Retreat for lunch, located across the street from the Owharoa Falls. Here you can sit outside and enjoy the day while your kids are happily entertained by the playground. *Make sure to have a booking as it can get busy over summer holidays. We did not plan ahead and due to staffing shortages were not even allowed to peak at a menu for a 1/2 hour.
You can view Owharoa Falls from the Waitawheta Road car park and only a short 5 minute walk will take you to the base. There are a series of 3 waterfalls although I did not know this tidbit of information during our visit. Only the 1st and 3rd tiers are easily accessible by foot. The 2nd tier can partly be seen from the Waitawheta Road. To reach the top of the falls you must continue up Waitawheta Road to a 2nd car park and then I was told it is in plain view.
The bottom of the Owharoa Falls makes a great swimming hole. When we 1st arrived at the base there were many swimmers sitting directly under the waterfall and jumping off rocks. There was a brief break where no one was in view allowing for this photo. The picture is not the best quality due to the hazy day and phone ability.
This area is worth a day away from the beach for exploring!
